THE IAEM BULLETIN

The IAEM Bulletin, the official newsletter of the International Association of Emergency Managers, is published monthly by IAEM to keep members abreast of association news, government actions affecting emergency management, and research and information sources. The publication is also intended to serve as a way for emergency management colleagues to exchange information on programs and ideas. The print edition is 16-24 pages, plus there is an extended online edition of up to 40 pages.

Readership

The Bulletin is distributed to 5,000+ emergency management officials each month, representing all levels of government, industrial, commercial, educational, military, private, non-profit and volunteer organizations. The newsletter is also sent to allied organizations and legislative representatives with a role in emergency management issues.

2012 Special Focus Issues

At least four times a year, the IAEM Bulletin includes a Special Focus section on a selected topic of interest to emergency managers. Here are the special focus issue topics for 2012, as approved by the IAEM-Global Board on Jan. 9, 2012:

  • Special Focus Issue: Global Issues (Mar. 2012 issue)
Deadline for article submissions: Feb. 15, 2012

The Editorial Work Group is interested in issues that affect a global audience, such as climate change, water scarcity, population growth, economic conditions, gender, what it’s like in the job market for new emergency managers, and student issues, to name but a few. Articles are encouraged from emergency managers worldwide.
  • Special Focus Issue: Gap Analysis (May 2012 issue)
Deadline for article submissions: Apr. 10, 2012

Where are we not focusing our efforts properly or effectively? Some gaps could include such issues as fuel shortages after disasters; tsunamis; asteroids, meteors or space debris; volcanoes; etc. Tell us how you engage in gap analysis and what you have learned from it. Where do you see emergency management in 2020? The Editorial Work Group is interested in obtaining a mix of articles from those teaching emergency management and those engaging in emergency management worldwide.
  • Special Focus Issue: Lessons Learned the Hard Way (Aug. 2012 issue)
Deadline for article submissions: July 10, 2012

Some suggested topics could be: community approaches and partnerships, disaster myths, what you learned from a disaster in your area, what you would do differently the next time, public health issues, civil defenses aspects, etc. The Editorial Work Group welcomes articles from emergency managers worldwide. Please read the Author's Guidelines, keep your article at no more than 750 words, and e-mail submissions to Karen Thompson, Editor, at Thompson@iaem.com. Articles published in the IAEM Bulletin meet the Publishing requirement of the CEM® Program.
  • Special Focus Issue: "Resiliency: Building a Better Tomorrow" (Oct. 2012 issue)
Deadline for article submissions: Sept. 10, 2012

Articles could be from a local, state or national government perspective; from a campus or healthcare emergency management perspective; or from a private sector perspective. What are the issues that lie ahead for your community, region, or country? What are you doing to improve resiliency and build a better tomorrow? What skills and experience are needed by the emergency managers of tomorrow to improve resilience? Articles are encouraged from emergency managers worldwide. Please read the Author's Guidelines, keep your article at no more than 750 words, and e-mail submissions to Karen Thompson, Editor, at Thompson@iaem.com. Articles published in the IAEM Bulletin meet the Publishing requirement of the CEM® Program.

Emergency Manager Practitioner Articles Collection

The “EM Practitioner Articles” collection is posted online in the Members Only area to collect and preserve information of value to IAEM members – professionals who are in the field of emergency management, are interested in protecting lives and property through an all-hazards approach, are concerned with national security, and have an emergency management/civil defense assignment in government, the military, industry, or a non-governmental organization.

  • This collection of articles, available to IAEM members, was developed and is maintained by the IAEM-Global Editorial Sub-Work Group. Volunteers from the work group make up the EM Practitioner Article Review Team.
  • Please Note: Article submissions are not subjected to editing or a comprehensive review, so posting of an article does not qualify as a “Publication” for purposes of the CEM® application package.
