This conference will address topics of high concern as wide as ranging school violence – school shootings, bullying, dating violence, vandalism, gang activity, alcohol and drugs, bomb threats, child abuse, vandalism, school massacres, catastrophic events such as pandemic outbreaks, tornadoes, terrorist attacks, and technological intrusions. Associations, academic institutions, EMS providers, and law enforcers will showcase the country’s state-wide initiatives on school defense and security for the development of the best practices for the school community.

The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) and the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) offer a chance to take a closer look at how the National Disaster Recovery Framework was used to respond to the drought of 2012 and how it continues to be applied in 2013. This Webinar was requested by members of the National VOAD Drought Task Force and the EDEN Drought National Extension Issues Leadership Team. The Webinar is open to anyone, but may be of special interest to VOAD and EDEN members, and federal, state and local agencies involved in drought response.

NTSB Staff Instructors will be joined by three guest lecturers specializing in public transportation disasters, mass-fatality scene management, and disaster victim identification from different key perspectives (the emergency manager, the medical examiner/coroner, and the sheriff/coroner): Dr. Andrew Baker (Chief Medical Examiner, Hennepin County, Minnesota); Mr. Jay Horsley (Sheriff’s Deputy, Lyon County, Nevada); and Mr. John Scrivani (Retired Deputy Commissioner for Operations, New York City Office of Emergency Management).

With the theme "Building Resilient Communities Through Policy and Mitigation," the meeting has much to offer engineers, scientists, emergency managers, and policy makers, highlighting earthquake policy issues, while also offering insights from researchers and practitioners from around the country. A free half-day pre-meeting workshop will be held Feb. 11 on "The Canterbury Earthquakes: Lessons and Implications for Regions Worldwide." The program is intended to deepen and broaden understanding of earthquake risk reduction, and to give attendees the opportunity to meet other leaders in the field.

For the first time, the National Tornado Summit will also include the National Severe Weather Workshop (NSWW). The breakout sessions, organized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will focus on crisis communication, emergency response analysis, significant weather events of 2012, tornado ratings and how social media impacts the effectiveness of severe weather watches and warnings.
