IAEM News Release (08 Apr 2009)
IAEM is pleased to announce that the association can now offer sponsorship to its non-U.S. members that will allow them to receive credit for the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI) online Independent Study courses. These courses offer exceptional opportunities for IAEM members to meet the education requirements for Certified Emergency Manager® (CEM®) or Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) certification.
Credit for completing the courses is generally only available to U.S. citizens, due to the fact that a U.S. Social Security Number is required. However, it is now possible for non-U.S. citizens to obtain credit for EMI's online Independent Study (IS) courses if:
- The non-U.S. citizen has an approved sponsor, such as IAEM, and
- The sponsoring organization makes a written request on its official organization letterhead.
IAEM will provide official letters of sponsorship for non-U.S. IAEM members who meet the following criteria:
- You are a current non-U.S. IAEM member in good standing, and
- You have received your Certified Emergency Manager® (CEM®) or Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) certification or you have applied for your CEM®/AEM certification. Register online to request an application package prior to requesting an IAEM sponsorship letter.
Once a non-U.S. citizen is approved for training, FEMA will assign a "unique student identifier" that will allow the non-U.S. citizen to receive credit for EMI's online Independent Study courses. This number will be valid as long as you are a current IAEM member and continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
If you are a non-U.S. IAEM member and would like to apply for a FEMA Student Identification Number, please contact:
