IAEM Participated in the California Emergency Management Association Senior Leaders Summit (10 June 2009) IAEM-USA Region 9 President, Gunnar J. Kuepper, and IAEM-USA Region 9 Vice President Michael Martinet, CEM, represented IAEM at the June 1, 2009 California Emergency Management Association Senior Leaders Summit, held in Burbank, CA. The purpose of this first of its kind meeting was to facilitate  dialogue on key statewide issues in Emergency Management and Homeland  Security, to identify potential areas for shared initiatives and  efforts as well as to provide Cal EMA with input on the development of  more effective programs, business practices and strategic planning.

IAEM Participated in the 2009 International Satellite and  Communications exchange (ISCe) in San Diego, CA (10 June 2009) Gunnar J. Kuepper, IAEM-USA Region 9 President, co-chaired two sessions at ISCe 2009, focusing on the use of satellite technology.

     The first panel, co-moderated with David Hartshorn, Secretary General  of GVF, a partner organisation of IAEM, was titled "SATCOM for  Emergency Management: Lessons from Disasters." Panelists included: Dipak  Basu, NetHope; John McCloskey, Director Product Management, Spacenet,  Inc.; Brian Steckler, Executive Director, Hastily Formed Networks Center, Naval Postgraduate School; and Donald Root, Jr., Assistant  Communications Systems Manager, Wireless Services Division, San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

     The second panel, co-moderated with Robert Bell, Executive Director of  the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) and World  Teleport Association (WTA), covered the subject of "Integrating SATCOM  into Civil Agency Commnications Networks." Panelists included: Sara Diaz, Manager Emerging Technologies, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department; John Diggs, Communications Coordinator, Traffic Division, Missouri Department of Transportation; Greg Heifner, CEO Orbital Data Net, Inc.; COL Quill Ferguson (U.S. Army) Deputy Chief of Staff G6, U.S. Army North, Fort Sam Houston, Texas; and John Hudson, Communications  Coordinator, California Emergency Management Agency. The audiences, including a variety of emergency management and  disaster relief professionals, were provided with insights on new  SATCOM and related technologies as well as opportunities to expand  communication abilities during a disaster.

      During the ISCe, Gunnar J. Kuepper met with LT General Russel L. Honore, U.S. Army (ret), Commander of the Joint Task Force Katrina and author of  the recently released book Survival: How a Culture of Preparedness Can  Save You and Your Family from Disasters, and Matthew Bettenhausen,  Acting Secretary of California Emergency Management Agency. Topics of the discussion included insights into the lessons from  Katrina, public expectations during a disaster, human factors, the  importance of public education and preparedness, and the potentially devastating effects of natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

IAEM Region 9 President Named as Director of Southern California Emergency Services Association (02/14/07)

IAEM Region 9 President Gunnar Kuepper was recently appointed to serve as a director on the board of the Southern California Emergency Services Association. He will be sworn into this position on Mar. 7, 2007. This will create an even stronger bond in the already excellent partnership between IAEM Region 9 and the California state association.  

IAEM Region 9 Holds July 11, 2006 Roundtable on "H5N1 Bird Flu – Threat of an Influenza Pandemic?" (07/15/06)

IAEM Region 9 held its second roundtable on "H5N1 Bird Flu - Threat of an Influenza Pandemic?" on July 11 at the Gilbert Fire Dept. Amphitheater in Gilbert, Arizona. The event attracted more than 60 participants from a variety of large private corporations and public agencies. News coverage was provided by local TV Channel 12 and by the Arizona Republic and East Valley Tribune newspapers. The presentation was delivered by IAEM Region 9 President Gunnar Kuepper, who was invited by Gilbert's emergency manager, Sheri Gibbons, to offer the roundtable in Arizona.

IAEM Region 9 Hosted a roundtable on "H5N1 Bird Flu - Threat of an Influenza Pandemic?" on May 15, 2006, at the Proud Bird Restaurant, Los Angeles CA.
