Press Release: Ontario Association of Emergency Managers Joins IAEM (04/28/06)

Yesterday, the members of the Ontario Association of Emergency Managers (OAEM) voted to become a chapter of IAEM Canada. "This is the single largest membership jump in the International Association of Emergency Managers’ (IAEM) history, adding more than 400 new members" said Executive Director Beth Armstrong, on hand for the deliberations. "IAEM is committed to the new partnership with OAEM to deliver membership benefits for emergency management professionals throughout North America and the world." Armstrong indicated that this includes additional representation for Canadians on the IAEM Board of Directors, as membership numbers warrant.

IAEM President Marg Verbeek, also a past president of OAEM, noted that this merger has been in the works for several years, since IAEM began development of its internationalization plan. "We envision the next step is adding a new level to the IAEM governance structure which would ensure that the organization is serving all constituencies globally." This would take the form of a body such as a "World Council" with seats for each member country or continent comprising IAEM.
OAEM President Alain Normand facilitated the action, which included a mandate that the OAEM Board of Directors work in partnership with IAEM Canada to formulate administrative details to support the decision. He said "OAEM goals are to encourage the growth and expansion of the association, to continue improving the level of service to our members and to foster greater recognition of the field of emergency management as a profession. The action taken yesterday is in perfect synch with these goals."

CCEP Initiates Canadian Emergency Management & Business Continuity Awards (04/12/06) The Canadian Centre for Emergency Preparedness has initiated the Canadian Emergency Management & Business Continuity Awards, a program to recognize and encourage men and women who have made extraordinary contributions to emergency management and business continuity in Canada. This awards program provides an opportunity for the Canadian EM & BC communities to honor individuals who have raised the bar and set standards for others to emulate. The inaugural awards will be presented at the 16th World Conference on Disaster Management in Toronto, Canada, June 18-21, 2006. Nominations close on May 15, 2006. Details and nomination forms are available at www.ccep.ca/awards/ccepawards.html.

The awards are to recognize individuals who have made a lasting contribution in the fields of emergency management or business continuity in at least one of the following areas:

  • Community Preparedness (provincial/territorial, regional or municipal)
  • National Preparedness
  • Private Sector Preparedness

There will be two awards:

  • Canadian Award for Emergency Management – to recognize an individual who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in, or contribution to emergency management. For the purposes of this award, emergency management is defined as an integrated approach to the management of emergency programs and activities for all four emergency phases (prevention/mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery), for all types of emergencies and disasters (natural and human induced), and for all levels of government and the private sector.
  • Canadian Award for Business Continuity Management – to recognize an individual who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in, or contribution to business continuity management (or continuity of operations planning). For the purposes of this award, business continuity management is defined as a holistic management process that identifies potential impacts that threaten an organization and provides a framework for building resilience with the capability for an effective response that safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders, reputation, brand, and value-creating activities
