 ABOUT IEMSA

INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT STUDENT ASSOCIATION

IAEM Student Region (Region 12)

Purpose of IEMSA

To strive to promote community awareness through practical education and the dissemination of information on the field of Emergency Management. We aspire to engage students in volunteer and/or interned positions which will benefit the students and prepare them for a career in the field. We will become a networking resource for students and alumni to increase student opportunities within the field of Emergency Management. We will be a uniting force "for students and by students."

What Is IEMSA?

The International Emergency Management Student Association is the student component of the International Emergency Management Association. IAEM is the chartering organization for local IEMSA chapters at graduate and undergraduate educational institutions. At the international level, the IEMSA members who are also paid members of IAEM make up IAEM’s Region 12 and enjoy full voting membership in the Association.

About IEMSA

IEMSA was created by students at UNT interested in advancing the field of Emergency Management through the experience of practical education and the promotion of academic standards. IEMSA was originally formed in response to a strong need for an international association for students seeking degrees in the field of emergency management. The International Emergency Management Student Association became that link between emergency management students around the world. Recent global awareness in the field of emergency management has facilitated an exponential growth in emergency management education programs and the number of students as well. Through uniting these students, IEMSA hopes to facilitate additional development in the field and support students on their path to careers in emergency management. IEMSA has great growth potential and will be an asset to a student's development in the field of emergency management. Furthermore, IEMSA facilitates an image of professionalism while it fosters the growth of interest in the field of emergency management.

IAEM recognized the important contributions emergency management students and students in other emergency service related programs, were making towards the continued evolution and growth of the emergency management profession and acknowledged that they literally represented the future of the emergency management profession. IAEM also recognizes the importance of facilitating the professional development of these students. To that end, the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) worked with the existing IEMSA chapters to incorporate the International Emergency Management Student Association (IEMSA) into IAEM. This helped IEMSA realize its main goal by providing the IEMSA members with an international-level organization to assist them in reaching out to other potential chapters, and providing benefits to supplement current IEMSA chapter activities.

IEMSA is a valuable networking resource for both students and alumni. We are an organization striving to unify the voice of emergency management students everywhere, currently consisting of seven fully chartered chapters: University of North Texas, Arkansas Tech University, Central Missouri State University, University of Akron, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Dakota State University, and Lakeland College. Our representatives are actively working with other schools interested in starting IEMSA chapters in the near future.
