The University of Canterbury Chapter was started in May 2008 and has continued to grow since this time. With support from the UC Natural Hazard Research Centre and Tim Davies, our academic advisor, as well as the UC Emergency Management team, the Chapter aims to enhance IAEM membership benefits, not only for students but also for other members in the local area. In this way we hope that our Chapter can become a hub for locally based members and can increase the links between emergency management students and practitioners. The purpose of the UC Student Chapter is to benefit and support its members, the Oceania Council and the IAEM by promoting the following:
- Support for the vision and mission of the IAEM and the Council;
- Academic and research excellence and opportunities within the fields of emergency management as well as their related disciplines;
- Meaningful opportunities for employment, professional development and networking; - Advocating the issues that are important to its members;
- Growth and diversity within the Membership of the Chapter; and
- Effective and efficient communication and involvement within the Chapter, with the Council and with all parts of the IAEM.
Chapter members come from a diverse range of backgrounds including engineering, geology, politics, law and geography. The Chapter meets once a month on campus and all tertiary students from the Christchurch area are welcome to attend - please contact the Secretary for details.
