Founded in September 2001, the Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies (ADES) program at Brandon University is the only undergraduate program in Canada where students can earn a bachelor's degree in arts or sciences, as they study disaster/emergency management principles. Graduates can gain professional employment in the private sector, in emergency management, health and other departments of municipal/provincial/federal governments or in non-governmental organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross.
The Disaster & Emergency Student Society (DESS) was founded by students to enhance the academic, social and career prospects of ADES students and alumni. Our goal is to help our members develop skills that will make them an asset to employers within the field of emergency management and academic disaster research. DESS is an International Association of Emergency Managers Student Chapter (IAEM-SC) and strives to provide networking opportunities, employment assistance, peer tutoring and other essential resources to its members, while promoting emergency/disaster awareness and preparedness within our community at large.
