ABOUT THE IAEM STUDENT COUNCIL (IAEM-SC)
IAEM-SC was originally begun as the International Emergency Management Student Association (IEMSA) created by students at the University of North Texas interested in advancing the field of Emergency Management through the experience of practical education and the promotion of academic standards. IEMSA was originally formed in response to a strong need for an international association for students seeking degrees in the field of emergency management. IEMSA became that link between emergency management students around the world.
IAEM recognized the important contributions emergency management students and students in other emergency service related programs were making towards the continued evolution and growth of the emergency management profession and acknowledged that they literally represented the future of the emergency management profession. IAEM also recognized the importance of facilitating the professional development of these students. To that end, IAEM worked with IEMSA to incorporate them into the larger organization as Region XII of IAEM. This helped IEMSA realize its main goal by providing the IEMSA members with an international-level organization to assist them in reaching out to other potential chapters, and providing benefits to supplement current IEMSA chapter activities.
As part of the global expansion of IAEM in 2008, the IEMSA name was officially dropped when IAEM created the IAEM-SC. Region XII of the USA Council was renamed the IAEM-USA Student Region and all chapters dropped the IEMSA name in favor of IAEM Student Chapters.
