Specialized Training and Information Workshops

2009 National Conference on Community Preparedness

Aug. 9-13, 2009 | Hyatt Regency Crystal City Hotel, Arlington, Virginia

In conjunction with the main program of the 2009 National Conference on Community Preparedness, FEMA is excited to offer conference attendees the opportunity to attend a 4-hour or 8-hour Specialized Training and Information Workshop focused on a community preparedness initiative on the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, and the morning of Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009. NCCP conference attendees who wish to attend one of the workshops listed below must sign up prior to the conference. Space in these workshops is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no additional fees to attend any of the Specialized Training and Information Workshops.

4-Hour Workshops:  

Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, 1:30-5:30 p.m.

1.  Media Matters: Making the Media Work for You 

Capacity: 30 -- SESSION FULL

This interactive workshop will help participants understand how the media currently report on disaster preparedness activities, develop a comprehensive approach to media outreach, and more effectively connect and work with local media sources to inform their community on preparedness. The Citizen Corps Media Toolkit will be presented, which provides many of the essential materials needed to begin communicating with a variety of different audiences about disaster preparedness and community resiliency. 

2.  TCL Performance Objectives: Community Preparedness & Participation

Capacity: 30 -- SESSION FULL

This workshop will review the newly revised target capabilities for Community Preparedness and Participation. Specific areas of discussion include national targets and metrics for developing local structures for collaborative planning, integrating nongovernmental resources into emergency operations plans and exercises, providing education and training to the public in all mission areas, providing volunteer opportunities, and incident response. 

3.  Mitigation Works

Capacity: 50

The Mitigation phase of Emergency Management focuses on breaking the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. In this 4-hour workshop, FEMA’s Mitigation Directorate will cover mitigation practices that provide value to the American people by creating safer communities and reducing loss of life and property.  FEMA will provide an overview of mitigation resources designed to reduce future losses to homes, businesses, schools, public buildings and critical facilities from natural disasters to include: risk analysis, mitigation planning, the National Flood Insurance Program and the Community Rating System, the Best Practices Portfolio, and public outreach materials.

4.  Planning for Children in Disasters

Capacity: 50

FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) will conduct a 4-hour training workshop to help participants plan for the special needs of children in disaster response and recovery.  Topics include safety, preparedness needs, sheltering, how to help children who are separated from their parents, and more. EMI has developed this program with IAEM, Save the Children, and the American Red Cross.

5.  CERT Showcase

Capacity: 200

This workshop will showcase successful Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) operations, initiatives and recent perspectives on CERT training from around the country. In this 4-hour workshop you will learn about innovative ways to address common challenges to help your CERT program flourish. Topics include: CERT Mutual Aid in Orange County Wildfires 2007-08; Merging the Message: A Path to Disaster Resiliency; National Perspective on Teen CERT:  What We’ve Learned; and Emergency Communications:  Integrating ARES into CERT.

and Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

6.  Medical Reserve Corps: Psychological First Aid Training

Capacity: 50

Psychological First Aid is an evidence-informed approach to help children, adolescents, adults, and families in the immediate aftermath of disaster and terrorism.  Psychological First Aid is designed to reduce initial distress caused by disasters and to foster short- and long-term adaptive functioning and coping. This 8-hour course, underwritten by the Medical Reserve Corps and developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, trains disaster response professionals in 8 core actions: Contact and Engagement, Safety and Comfort, Stabilization, Information Gathering, Practical Assistance, Connection with Social Supports, Information on Coping, and Linkage with Collaborative Services as well as practical strategies to assist survivors in meeting their disaster related needs.

 

7.  Neighborhood Watch Capacity Building

Capacity: 50

This training is designed to build the capacity of law enforcement officers assigned to work with community groups by providing specific instruction on the Neighborhood Watch Toolkit. The course will increase participants’ skill levels by teaching them the proper utilization of the tools and the most effective methods of maximizing the Toolkit’s value for their citizens and communities. The training is intended to be interactive and applicable to participants with all levels of Neighborhood Watch experience.

8.  Engaging the Private Sector in Disaster Response and Recovery

Capacity: 50 -- SESSION FULL

FEMA’s Private Sector Office will conduct a training workshop for participants to learn about the Private Sector function in the Joint Field Office during disasters and how FEMA’s private sector field team is a resource during response/recovery to disasters. Topics include how to build relationships with and communicate with the private sector, real world examples of private sector participation in response, and available tools and resources.
