Emergency Management and IAEM in Oceania are currently at a cross-roads. Significant investment has been put into Emergency Management on both sides of the Tasman and within most Pacific Island states over the past few years. We have seen the spectre of international terrorism and human disease pandemic introduce a degree of unexpected reality to the all-hazards model over the past decade. More recent natural hazard disasters have reminded us that we must keep our eyes on all the risks that our communities face.
Credible professional collaboration, representation and recognition should now come to the fore in the face of these increasing risks and expectations. The interests of professional Emergency Management practitioners, particularly those working within or aspiring to roles within Emergency Management agencies should be the focus of IAEM for the next few years.
More Emergency Management professionals need to be convinced of real benefits of membership in IAEM, other than attaining the Certified Emergency Management “qualification”, by way of more transparent and proactive work of the Oceania chapter.
I believe that my experience and drive will bring new energy and achievement to IAEM in Oceania - better ensuring that all Emergency Management professionals in the Oceania region have a credible voice within IAEM as well as within the broader national and international Emergency Management communities.
I look forward to serving you all as we move IAEM and Emergency Management into a more professional and mutually supportive future.
