IAEM Canada and IAEM Canada Student Region have teamed up with CITIG and the Fifth Canadian Public Safety Interoperability Workshop!
CITIG has graciously offered to support 4 students with a discount of at least 50% of the regular conference registration fee in exchange for assistance with the conference report and possibly other duties at the event.
The Fifth Canadian Public Safety Interoperability Workshop aims to again bring together a broad base of public safety and emergency management practitioners to develop a mutual understanding of the key voice and data interoperability issues facing today’s public safety sector. With a focus on information exchange, topic-specific practices and experience, and the development of a more unified approach to public safety interoperability across the country, between nations, and internationally. workshop website
Here is the fine print:
- You must be a current student and an IAEM Canada Student Region member.
- You are expected to participate in taking notes, assisting with the development of the conference report, and other duties as assigned by the Workshop Organizers.
- You must attend all sessions for all three days including your assigned session(s).
- One student will be assigned to ‘tweet’ about the conference at our IAEM Canada Student Region twitter account.
What you get:
- An excellent learning opportunity with a group of Canada’s top emergency management and emergency services professionals. The agenda information can be downloaded here.
- Experience that can be used towards your AEM/CEM application or renewal.
- Networking and contacts that get your name out there!
Application:
Please download the application form here. Complete the form and email it to shannansaunders@gmail.com before 18 November 2011. Candidates will be chosen by a panel at CITIG and will be notified by email after 21 November.
The successful candidates will receive deeply discounted registration fees for the conference in return for their active participation. All travel and living expenses are the responsibility of the student.
Tips for Going to a Conference:
- Come prepared. Be sure you have a notepad and paper so that you can take personal notes in sessions you are not scribing for.
- Treat it as a potential job interview. You will be meeting people who you may be looking to for jobs in the near future. Bring resumes and business cards (contact shannansaunders@gmail.com for information and tips on inexpensive and professional cards).
- Dress the part. You are representing IAEM Canada and the Student Region as well as yourself. Dress is business casual which means no jeans, no hats, no logos gestures or other graphic images. You will leave an impression on those you network with and you want it to be a good one!
- Included in your registration is some breakfasts and lunches as well as networking receptions. Be prepared, however, to purchase meals that are not provided or that better fit your dietary requirements.
Hotel:
The conference hotel is the Chateau Laurier and a discounted rate of $155 per night. Their contact information is 1800-441-1414. There are other hotels in the area, within walking distance, which you might find cheaper so if you cannot afford the conference hotel, please shop around. Remember, lodging is your responsibility.
If you have any questions or require more information, please contact Shannan Saunders at shannansaunders@gmail.com.
