APUS Chapter Newsletter, "The Guardian":

American Public University System now has an IAEM student chapter with more than 90 members. Officers are led by APUS students Bob Ellis (President), Cory Mero (VP), Evelio Matos (Secretary) and Dan Niederman (Treasurer). Faculty co-sponsors are IAEM members/APUS professors Chris Reynolds and Mike Kemp. It is the largest student chapter in IAEM's Region 12.
This is APUS's first ever student organization, and the university has given the chapter outstanding support throughout the founding process. It is IAEM's 10th student chapter. IAEM staffers provided terrific leadership and administrative support in solving the problems of adding members from an online community of students in 21 time zones. Nearly 85% of APUS's students are in the military, and many more students are in first responder local agencies. APUS IEMSA's primary goals are to provide service to the community and university, benefits to student members, and eventual transition to IAEM as regular members. For APUS students, "community" is the world.

Emergency management started at Arkansas Tech in 1997 and was one of the first bachelor's degree programs in the country in this discipline. In 2004, a grant was received for developing an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on campus, which opened in 2005 as one of only a few EOCs on college campuses. Also in 2005, the EM program became a department at Arkansas Tech. A master's degree program began in 2006.
The Department of Emergency Administration and Management offers bachelor of science and master of science degrees in emergency management and homeland security.

The George Washington University chapter was started in the summer of 2008, and is sponsored by the Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management at GWU. John Jay College’s Graduate Programs offer a Masters of Science Degree in Protection Management and a Masters Degree in Public Administration, both with concentrations in Emergency Management. John Jay College also offers undergraduate degrees in Fire & Emergency Service, Security Management, and Fire Science.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) is a regimented state college located in Buzzards Bay, MA. In 2004, MMA joined the growing ranks of colleges to offer a Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management/Homeland Security. The Emergency Management program offers students the scientific and analytical background to approach emergency situations with knowledge and skill. Classes such as Infectious Agents, Radiological Materials, Risk Assessment and Public Health Issues lay a strong foundation. The academics are supplemented with a mandatory internship, customary to MMA’s “Learn, Do, Learn” tradition. The graduating Class of 2008 will be the first to include the Emergency Management degree.

In 2007, MMA launched its Master of Science in Emergency Management degree. The program builds upon topics covered in the undergraduate module and is offered in a part-time executive format.
